Why I created this School

The creation of the Pernoo School of Musical Performance grew naturally from many years of experience as both a performer and a teacher. Throughout my career I have had the privilege of teaching in several great institutions, including the Royal College of Music in London, the Conservatoire de Paris, and the Musica Mundi School in Brussels, as well as leading masterclasses in many countries. These experiences gradually led me to develop a personal approach to teaching, centred above all on artistic expression, a deep understanding of the works, and the desire to transmit what music can reveal.

Alongside teaching, my life has always been deeply rooted in performance. Concerts, chamber music projects, the creation of a festival, the founding of the Centre de musique de chambre de Paris, and the exploration of new and imaginative concert formats have all shaped my understanding of music as a living art. I have never imagined stepping onto the stage without feeling the need to pass on everything that the experience of performance teaches me. For this reason, the school is fundamentally oriented toward musical performance.

The creation of this school is also a tribute to the teachers who shaped my own path. Germaine Fleury, who guided me in the discovery of the cello from the age of five to sixteen. Xavier Gagnepain, whose influence marked a decisive turning point in my adolescence and whose teaching still accompanies my daily work. Philippe Muller, who supported me patiently and rigorously throughout my higher studies, building my musical foundations step by step.

I also owe much to the musical encounters that have shaped my life on stage, especially my collaboration with the pianist and composer Jérôme Ducros. I am equally indebted to the extraordinary inspiration of Vladimir Perline, an incomparable teacher of children, as well as to my deep attachment to theatre, to the arts, and to life itself.

These influences have nourished the vision at the heart of the Pernoo School of Musical Performance: a place where artistic experience, reflection on the works, and the joy of transmitting music come together.

“I have never imagined stepping onto the stage without passing on what performance teaches me.”

Collaborative work

Karine Sélo

Pianist

Karine Sélo has worked alongside Jérôme Pernoo for more than twenty-five years, in both lessons and masterclasses. At the school, she accompanies all teaching and plays a central role in preparing students for performance.

In the Advanced Studies program, she leads a weekly coaching session focused on ensemble playing, listening, and harmonic awareness. This regular work allows students to develop a deeper understanding of the musical text and to prepare public performances with precision and confidence.

She also accompanies recitals, examinations, and international competitions selection recordings. Her deep knowledge of the repertoire and her long experience make her an essential artistic partner in the training process.

What makes the difference

Instrumentalists benefit from the same level of collaborative preparation usually reserved for singers.
